The ask
KEGOC, the national grid operator, already had a wide-area monitoring system (WAMS). It measures voltage, current, frequency and phase angles at nodes across the country, with synchronised timestamps.
The next step was control: a wide-area control system (WACS) that uses those measurements to act on the grid automatically.
What Faceplate built
An automatic load-distribution project on the Faceplate platform, working within the WAMS structure.
- Monitors electricity consumption across the country continuously
- Calculates the best load for each generating station in real time
- Recalculates almost every second; the same task used to be done once a day from a daily report
Why it matters
Dispatchers see the state of the power system as it is now, not as it was in yesterday’s report. Generation follows consumption more closely, which lowers the risk of accidents and makes room for more variable renewable generation.
