21:10 · Gas compressor station · January
Minus twenty-four outside.
Four gas turbines push gas toward the next station, 180 km down the line. Two operators watch them through the night.
The seal that failed on schedule

A compressor rarely fails with an alarm.
It fails with a drift. A seal pressure a little lower each hour. An exhaust spread a few degrees wider. Every value stays inside its limits until the moment the protection trips the unit, the station loses a quarter of its capacity, and the line pressure starts to fall.
By then the night shift is no longer operating the station. It is recovering it.
One night, hour by hour.
21:40
The seal starts to leak.
Seal pressure on unit U1 begins to fall: a tenth of a bar in an hour, well inside its limits. Nothing alarms.
22:15
An agent connects three sensors.
The anomaly agent sees the seal pressure, a bearing temperature and a vent flow moving together. It names the pattern: fault F04, probability 19 %.
23:30
The pattern has a history.
At 44 % the agent checks the documentation and the unit’s record. This drift precedes a dry-gas seal failure. The protection will trip the unit in six to twenty-four hours.
00:10
The twin tries the station on three units.
Move U1’s load to U2: the station still holds the pressure the line needs. Keep running and wait: an unplanned trip before dawn.
00:20
The supervisor decides.
One message, with the trend, the document page and the twin run behind it. Load moves to U2; U1 is scheduled to stop at 06:00, when the maintenance crew arrives.
06:00
U1 stops on schedule.
The fault probability had reached 96 %. The seal is replaced in daylight, with spares on hand, and the line never lost pressure.
Who was on shift.
On this station four agents keep watch. Turbine health follows compressor fouling and recommends washes. The surge monitor watches the margin to the surge line. The combustion agent watches exhaust spread. The shift-handover agent writes the morning note.
CS1 U3: compressor wash recommended. Degradation index 3.2.
CS2 U2: surge margin down to 8 %. Recycle valve likely to open within 10 min.
Station SCADA in production
Faceplate SCADA runs three compressor stations at Kashagan, delivered as a full EPC project in 2023 with Allen-Bradley controllers and three emergency-shutdown systems. The agents in this story are shown on a model of a three-station gas pipeline.
