The ask
The dispatch system had reached end of life just as the balancing market, renewable growth and smart-grid elements arrived. The operator needed real-time integration of 300+ power entities, cross-border coordination with neighbouring systems, on-field AI and ML, and mission-critical accuracy.
The decision
KEGOC chose a platform developed in Kazakhstan for the modernisation of its SCADA/EMS. The project was financed from the operator’s own funds.
What was built
A national and regional SCADA/EMS on the Faceplate runtime and distributed historian.
- 50 servers, 70 workstations, 400 corporate users
- Digital twin and mathematical model of the unified power system
- Integration with automatic power and frequency control, delivered as a separate project (see the case)
- Wide-area monitoring and control: stability limits and reserves in real time, load distribution recalculated almost every second instead of once a day (see the case)
- Regional load forecasting under 5% test error
- AI dispatcher advisor at the regional dispatch centres
The result
The Government of Kazakhstan reported that the platform saved the KEGOC group $1.6M through lower losses and cut operating and maintenance costs for users by $1.3M (October 2025). It runs KEGOC’s grid of about 27,000 km of 220–1150 kV lines, with 242 grid entities and 200 generation facilities, including the country’s largest oil and gas producers. AI.KEGOC, KEGOC’s AI system built on Faceplate, won the quasi-public sector nomination of the national AI Governance Cup 2026; the awards were presented by the President of Kazakhstan.
